Podiatrists are the experts in foot and ankle medicine therefore when it comes to pharmacological management for foot related conditions look no further than Enable Podiatry. Podiatrists who have undergone extensive training are eligible to prescribe a specific class of medicines within Australia.
What is an Endorsed Podiatrist?
An Endorsed Podiatrist has undergone additional training and certification to specialise in prescribing scheduled medications to patients, without the need for a GP referral.
This endorsement signifies that the podiatrist has achieved a higher level of expertise and has met specific criteria set by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
What can an Endorsed Podiatrist prescribe?
An endorsed podiatrist can prescribe:
- Antibiotics – to treat foot infections from wounds or ingrown toenails
- Antifungals – to treat fungal nail and skin infections
- Anaesthesia – methoxyflurane (the ‘green whistle’) anaesthetises without a needle for minor procedures such as removing an ingrown toenail
- Gout medications – to lower uric levels and relieve pain and swelling
- Cortisone injections – under guided ultrasound, to treat plantar fasciitis, and forefoot pathologies.
- Topical dermatological preparations – to treat skin dermatological presentations
Endorsed podiatrists are able to use their existing podiatry skillset of diagnosis and management strategies, in conjunction with prescribing scheduled medicines where required.
This means the patient does not need to see their GP as well as their podiatrist in many instances, including the treatment of an ingrown toenail.
Nicola Callender possess the authority to prescribe, administer and dispense the Podiatry board approved list of scheduled medicines. To find out more information regarding prescription medicines within podiatric practice please contact our clinic.
